The Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo will commemorate the birth and death anniversaries of the muralist

#SecretaríaDeCultura.- The National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL), through the Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo (MCEDRyFK), will commemorate the 64th anniversary of Diego Rivera’s death and the 135th anniversary of his birth as part of the campaigns «Contigo en la distancia» and #VolverAVerte of the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Mexico.

Diego Rivera (Guanajuato, December 8, 1886-Mexico City, November 24, 1957) lived and worked in his studio in San Ángel from 1932 until his death. Every year, relatives of the muralist and INBAL authorities gather at the mausoleum of the Rotonda de las Personas Ilustres to pay tribute to his career and his contributions to the arts in Mexico.

For this year, the MCEDRyFK is preparing a hybrid tribute, which will consist of a floral offering at the San Ángel venue, while a small group of members of the venue and the Diego Rivera Mural Museum will visit the Rotonda de las Personas Ilustres to lay flowers and send a message to the artistic community and the painter’s family.

As for online activities, starting November 24, the virtual exhibition Memoria hemerográfica de Diego Rivera will be shared on the MCEDRyFK’s social networks, which will be made up of various newspaper articles that reported on the painter’s death. Among them are those dedicated by Julio Scherer García, Raquel Tibol, Luis Cardoza y Aragón, Carlos Pellicer and Benjamín Carrión. In the texts that will be shown -thanks to the support of the Hemeroteca Nacional de México- one can glimpse the interest that since 1957 there was in converting the San Ángel studio into a museum, which finally happened in December 1986, in the framework of the centennial of Rivera’s birth.

The MCEDRyFK will also recall the first murals the artist painted in Mexico with a series of images that will be shared through its social networks between November 24 and December 8, which will be accompanied by historical and little-known data. A collection of e-cards will also be published under the title Diego Rivera. Memoria de infancia, made up of drawings that the painter made during his childhood.
