IMSS implements strategies to strengthen the service of nurses caring for pediatric oncology patients

#InstitutoMexicanoDelSeguroSocial.- In compliance with the commitment that the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) has with the mothers and fathers of pediatric oncology patients, efforts are being made to improve the service provided by the personnel assigned to the care of children with cancer at the medical units in Mexico City, Puebla, San Luis Potosí and Baja California.

At the head of the 63rd meeting between IMSS authorities and parents of children with cancer, Dr. Celida Duque Molina, Director of Medical Services, pointed out that the distribution of nursing staff, training, surveillance and supervision should lead to improvements in all medical areas.

«We are sure that these interventions will lead to better results» in the care provided to pediatric patients, said Dr. Duque Molina in a virtual session.

In her message, Dr. Rocío Cárdenas Navarrete, director of the Hospital de Pediatría Centro Médico Nacional (CMN) Siglo XXI, explained that it is the unit’s policy that all medical and nursing staff should know how to handle vascular accesses, from venoclysis to temporary or permanent catheters.

He indicated that in this High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE) training is continuous and is provided by a specialized group of nurses, who in turn make tours of the wards and verify, as a form of quality control, the handling of vascular accesses.

Cardenas Navarrete said that each doctor and nurse is responsible for the care of the vascular accesses of the patient in their charge; in addition, the Hospital Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases area, through the Infection Committee, monitors the care and timely detection of colonized catheters or accesses.

In turn, Dr. Guillermo Careaga Reyna, director of the Hospital General CMN La Raza, indicated that the nursing staff for Pediatric Hematology and Oncology has training courses for patient care, as well as the auxiliary nurses, pediatric specialists, general nurses and general nursing assistants.
