Failed Approach Maneuvers are performed for flight safety: AFAC

#SecretaríaDeComunicacionesYTransportes.- The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT), through the Federal Aviation Agency (AFAC), informs that the missed approach maneuver, missed approach or «go airborne», as they are known in the aeronautical environment, is considered the safest of all to land at any airport and is the best decision that the pilot and/or a controller can make.

This is in relation to the media reports of recent incidents involving the landing of a Volaris and an Aeromexico aircraft.

The maneuver is appropriate in the following cases:

  • Because an aircraft that landed has not vacated the runway in use.
  • Because a plane is about to take off, but has not been authorized to take off, and another plane is approaching the runway; the latter must «go into the air» (as a safety measure).
  • When an aircraft or vehicle crosses, encroaches on or obstructs the runway.
  • Weather and/or visibility conditions (which makes it safer to «go airborne»).
  • Sudden changes in wind intensity.
  • Electrical failures on the runway or in airport facilities.
  • Any abnormal condition in the aircraft’s operating systems.
  • Earthquakes or tremors, which force to review the conditions of the runway’s carpeting.
  • Any other emergent or unexpected situation that forces the crew to «go airborne».
