Mexican government dignifies the work of teachers with salary increase

#GobiernoDeMéxico.- President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that the country’s basic education school teachers will receive a salary increase in order to recognize and dignify their work.

In a morning press conference, the President informed that the change in teachers’ salaries will be applied as of January 1st and will be paid retroactively.

The salary increase will be of 3.5 percent per year and 1.8 percent in benefits, stated Rogelio Ramírez de la O, Secretary of Finance and Public Credit.

He informed that the Salary Welfare Policy for teachers aims to benefit 1,101,000 education workers; priority will be given to those with lower incomes in order to correct injustices and inequities in remuneration.

The head of SHCP explained that the increase will be staggered. Around 123,259 teachers who earn less than 10,000 pesos per month will receive a 3 percent increase; 504,618 teachers who earn between 10,000 and 15,000 pesos per month will receive an additional 2 percent; and finally, 329,158 education workers who earn between 15,000 and 20,000 pesos per month will receive an additional 1 percent.
