IMSS has provided more than 815 thousand digital consultations for patients with COVID-19, chronic diseases and specialties

#InstitutoMexicanoDelSeguroSocial.- In order to attend and follow up patients with COVID-19, and with chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension or heart disease that do not require medical attention in person, family physicians and specialists of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) have provided more than 815 thousand digital consultations.

The technical coordinator of Medical Risks, Quality and Patient Safety of the IMSS, Dr. Italy Adriana Arvizu (IAA), pointed out that digital consultations began to be given to people diagnosed with coronavirus treated in Family Medicine Units, in order to avoid contagion and to keep an adequate control of the patients, as part of a joint strategy between the medical area and the Directorate of Innovation and Technological Development (DIDT).

She explained that, after consolidating this model of care in the UMFs, its implementation began in hospitals and medical units of the Second and Third Level of Care, for specialties such as Psychology, Psychiatry, Pain Clinic, Transplants and Palliative Care, with the intention of benefiting beneficiaries who live in remote regions and who receive consultation from a specialist in the main High Specialty Medical Units (UMAE).

Dr. Arvizu said that, although this program is in its pilot phase, it has already been implemented in 271 Family Medicine Units, 97 Second Level hospitals and 17 UMAE throughout the country, with the participation of the IMSS Representative Offices in Nuevo León, Chiapas, Michoacán, Coahuila and Zacatecas.
