IMSS specialists achieve multi-organ procurement to give 10 patients another chance at life

#InstitutoMexicanoDelSeguroSocial.- The hearts were for a 55-year-old woman with cardiomyopathy secondary to aortic valve lesion and for a 59-year-old man with ischemic heart disease.

A team of specialists from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), belonging to the General and Specialty Hospitals of the National Medical Center (CMN) La Raza, were able to procure two hearts, four kidneys, two livers and two corneas to give another chance at life to 10 people who were on the waiting list for a transplant.

Thanks to the generosity of the families who donated their patients’ organs, last Friday, July 22, the team of the High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE) «Dr. Gaudencio González Garza» of CMN La Raza, moved to the General Hospital «Dr. Eduardo Vázquez Navarro» of the Ministry of Health in the City of Puebla to carry out the seventh multi-organ donation of this year.

In this process, a 30 year-old man with a medical diagnosis of brain death secondary to a cranioencephalic trauma underwent transplantation surgery; the heart was obtained and transplanted to a 55 year-old woman with cardiomyopathy secondary to aortic valve lesion, treated at the General Hospital of CMN La Raza; the liver was sent to the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition «Salvador Zubirán» of the Ministry of Health; the corneas and kidneys were transplanted in Puebla for patients on the waiting list in the same state.
