Conservation and restoration project begins at the Ek’ Balam Archaeological Zone, Yucatán / @alefrausto @cultura_mx >>>

#SecretaríaDeCultura.- The Ministry of Culture of the Government of Mexico, through the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), will begin the Archaeological Zone Improvement Program (Promeza) in the Ek’ Balam Archaeological Zone, located in the northeastern part of the state of Yucatan.

Through Promeza, archaeological work will be carried out in the Acropolis of the archaeological zone, including conservation, restoration and consolidation of monuments of this heritage site belonging to the Maya culture; an investment of 25 million pesos is contemplated and the temporary employment of 80 people, including specialists and people from the communities of Ek’ Balam, Temozón and Valladolid.

During 12 months, researchers and restorers will work on the archaeological monuments and will try to solve conservation problems at the site, which was opened to the public 21 years ago, after an extensive restoration project.

Archaeologist Leticia Vargas de la Peña and archaeologist Víctor Castillo Borges, from the INAH Yucatán Center, will direct the research tasks, and restorer Alejandra Alonso Olvera, from the National Coordination for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage (CNCPC) of INAH, the conservation and restoration project in the archaeological zone.
