#IMSS.- Thanks to the successful surgery performed by specialists of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) in Chiapas, Mrs. Maurilia «N» recovered her health and quality of life, after the removal of an apple-sized tumor dependent on the meninges of her brain.

The patient began three years ago with constant headaches, which she thought were the result of the stress of daily life, but with time they increased; she gradually lost strength in her left arm and leg, so last October she decided to go to the Hospital General de Zona (HGZ) No. 1 «Nueva Frontera», in Tapachula, where she was diagnosed with a right frontal extra-axial tumor suggestive of meningioma.

The case was attended by neurosurgeon Francisco Velázquez Robledo, assigned to HGZ No. 1, who said that this type of procedures are regularly performed in third level hospitals; however, thanks to the fact that the hospital has highly qualified specialists and the necessary infrastructure, it was possible to remove the tumor and restore Doña Maurilia’s quality of life.

«We performed imaging studies, including a CT scan and a brain MRI, where it was confirmed that the tumor was in the cerebral meninges, invading the primary motor area and the parietal region where the primary sensory area is on the right side, invading the bone and the superior sagittal sinus,» the specialist informed.
