Gastronomy enriches México’s tourism offerings, highlights Miguel Torruco at FITUR 2023 / @TorrucoTurismo @SECTUR_mx>>>

#SECTUR.- Participating in the Forum «Gastronomic Tourism Opportunities in the Ibero-American Region» organized by the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB), the head of the Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) said that the restaurant industry represents 12.2% of Mexico’s businesses and just over 2 million jobs, according to data from the National Chamber of the Restaurant Industry and Seasoned Foods (CANIRAC).

Before Ambassador Lorena Larios Rodríguez, Secretary for Ibero-American Cooperation; María Reyes Maroto, Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism of Spain; and the Mexican Ambassador to Spain, Quirino Ordaz Coppel, he pointed out that, out of every 100 companies dedicated to the food and beverage business, 96 are micro-enterprises, providing 70 out of every 100 jobs and generating 56 out of every 100 Mexican pesos.

«I share with you that last November 16, 2022, we celebrated the 12th anniversary of the declaration of traditional Mexican cuisine as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, by UNESCO, taking Michoacán’s gastronomy as a paradigm,» he commented.

Torruco Marqués added that Mexican gastronomy is synonymous with national identity, as well as an important travel motivator and a great opportunity for social and economic development. Likewise, for tourism, gastronomy is a relevant factor, as it is an added value and a differentiating element recognized nationally and beyond our borders.
