#GobiernoDeMéxico.- The Constitutional President of the United Mexican States, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, presented the National Food Sovereignty Program, which aims to boost production in the Mexican countryside, as well as bring sustainable and healthy food to Mexican families at affordable prices.

“It is a very complete program of food sovereignty and sustainable and healthy food for all Mexicans; it is to produce what we consume; of course there is a market, that will continue to exist, but it is not only to support small and medium producers, but also to have healthy food at good prices for Mexican families,» he explained.

He stressed that the aim is to promote self-sufficiency in foods such as beans, rice and corn for the production of these seeds in a certified manner and with the highest quality standards.

“What are we proposing? First, to strengthen food sovereignty and also the self-sufficiency of certain products, which is not the same thing, particularly beans, rice, other vegetables and of course white corn, that is one issue; for this, we must support the small, medium-sized producer, because the large producer has his own conditions and it is not necessary to support him, he has his own markets, many of them are export markets, and that will continue to exist. What we want is to strengthen support to the small and medium producer and, as the Secretary of Agriculture has rightly pointed out, to strengthen the capacities to produce seeds and promote agroecological production.”

The Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, Julio Berdegué Sacristán, informed that food sovereignty has four fundamental axes: welfare, to contribute to the eradication of extreme poverty; production, to increase national food production; efficient use of water in irrigation and sustainability to accelerate the ecological transition of the entire agri-food system, significantly reducing deforestation, the use of pesticides and promoting sustainable fishing.

“The guiding axis, the compass of the Fourth Transformation policy in the Mexican countryside is food sovereignty. And what does this mean? It means that the country has all the necessary conditions to guarantee the constitutional right to food, not only today, but in the future. That means, of course, producing more healthy food, but it also means the welfare of the people who produce that food, both farmers, fishermen, day laborers; it means taking care of our soils; it means taking care of our water; it means using less pesticides; it means strengthening our Mexican science and technology for agri-food production.”
