#Tlalnepantla<\/strong>,\u00a0#StateOfMexico<\/strong>.- The year 2025<\/strong> is being charted as the one with the highest volume of pluvial precipitation<\/strong> so far this century, a fact that far outstrips the operational capacity of the hydraulic networks in many major cities across the State of Mexico and the country. This was explained by Alberto Vald\u00e9s Rodr\u00edguez<\/strong>, Director of the Potable Water Authority of Tlalnepantla (OPDM<\/strong>), who underscored the infrastructure’s vulnerability<\/strong> to adverse weather events. The sheer intensity of the rainfall is placing the drainage systems under severe strain, compelling authorities to seek both immediate and long-term solutions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the north-eastern Valle de M\u00e9xico, the cumulative rainfall over the past twelve months has already exceeded the annual average of 700 millimetres per square metre<\/strong>, with forecasts suggesting it could reach up to 1,100 millimetres<\/strong> due to the current hurricane and tropical storm season. One single recent event saw 100 millimetres of water fall per square metre<\/strong>, a volume that overwhelmed the obsolete drainage systems<\/strong> in various municipalities across the state and Mexico City. This critical issue is further compounded by the thousands of tonnes of rubbish<\/strong> that are severely obstructing the networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within the Tlalnepantla municipality, eight specific locations<\/strong> across primary and secondary roads suffer from recurrent flooding<\/strong>, despite the OPDM’s constant efforts in cleaning, dredging, and maintaining pumping stations. These persistent waterlogging issues are caused by the heavy rainfall, the limited drainage capacity<\/strong> of the hydraulic networks, and the condition of tributaries such as the R\u00edo Tlalnepantla<\/strong>, whose culverted nature critically restricts its flow capacity. The most vulnerable sites include Avenida Gustavo Baz and Reyes Heroles<\/strong>, as well as stretches of Perif\u00e9rico Norte and Avenida Jinetes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In light of this daunting situation, Vald\u00e9s Rodr\u00edguez<\/strong> stressed the urgency of implementing new and viable alternatives<\/strong> that will either eradicate or significantly reduce flooding in the most susceptible urban areas. The OPDM is currently conducting surveys of the existing hydraulic infrastructure<\/strong> to design supplementary drainage lines and undertake major pumping station refurbishments. The official issued a stern warning that Tlalnepantla citizens \u00abmust not get used to the flooding<\/strong>,\u00bb as had been the case under the previous municipal administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the OPDM’s economic crisis<\/strong> inherited from the prior administration, the Council is actively seeking funds and signing cooperation agreements with the National Water Commission (CONAGUA<\/strong>), the State of Mexico government, and private industry. Financing is being sought for key projects, such as the repair of pumping stations via the Comprehensive Eastern Zone Plan<\/strong>. The Tlalnepantla government is also evaluating the option of diverting water towards the Perif\u00e9rico Norte, which, although requiring a multi-million pound investment<\/strong> in directional drilling, would guarantee road safety<\/strong> and significantly improve community infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
