#SecretaryOf Economy<\/strong>,\u00a0#M\u00e9xico<\/strong>.- One year on from committing to the National Chamber of Freight Transport (CANACAR<\/strong>), the Mexican Government, through the Secretariats of Economy and Environment and Natural Resources, has introduced a crucial new instrument. This regulation sets the environmental conditions<\/strong> for the definitive import of used diesel-powered vehicles weighing over 3,857 kilograms<\/strong> gross vehicular weight. This measure is aimed at modernising the national fleet and tackling the persistent issue of vehicular pollution in Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard<\/strong>, emphatically stated that the import of vehicles failing to meet Mexico’s environmental standards is now over, with the new rules \u00abalready published in the Official Gazette\u00bb<\/strong>. This action fulfils the direct instruction given by the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo<\/strong>. Secretary Ebrard<\/strong> highlighted that \u201cThis Agreement benefits everyone; it limits the entry of old and unsafe lorries, reduces polluting emissions, improves traffic safety, and protects public health\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Secretariats of Economy and Environment and Natural Resources have jointly established limits on the manufacturing year of the diesel engines in used lorries entering the country definitively. Customs checks will now ensure that the engine’s year of manufacture is no older than 10 years<\/strong>. The Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources, Alicia B\u00e1rcena<\/strong>, affirmed the Secretariat’s clear commitment to \u00abdecarbonise the Mexican economy\u00bb<\/strong> and reduce harmful emissions, noting that the transport sector is a leading contributor to greenhouse gases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alicia B\u00e1rcena<\/strong> further elaborated that \u201cThe Agreement presented today seeks to establish stricter regulations that raise the sector’s environmental standards\u201d<\/strong>. She stressed that this simply means Mexico will no longer permit the import of \u00abhighly polluting diesel lorries and buses\u00bb<\/strong>, allowing only units up to 10 years old that comply with the \u00abstrictest international standards\u00bb<\/strong>. She concluded that \u00abCaring for the air we breathe… is the basis of a modern, clean, and sustainable economy\u00bb<\/strong>, which is the vision driven by President Sheinbaum<\/strong>‘s ‘Plan Mexico’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
