The Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley community receives the certificate of inscription on the World Heritage List

#SecretaríaDeCultura.- The Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), the Ministry of Culture, the UNESCO Office in Mexico, the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp) and the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) presented the community of Cuicatlán and the Government of the State of Oaxaca with the certificate of inscription on the World Heritage List and unveiled the plaque commemorating its designation as a Mixed World Heritage Property of the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley: A habitat originating in Mesoamerica, located in the states of Oaxaca and Puebla.

The Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources, María Luisa Albores González, who was accompanied by the head of CONANP, Adán Peña Fuentes, said that this recognition represents a great responsibility for institutions and authorities to protect the biodiversity of this area, but above all, to ensure that the people, who are the guardians of this territory, live well and with dignity. For this reason, he reiterated the support of the agency he heads to the states of Oaxaca and Puebla to work together to put people, families and communities at the center.

On behalf of the federal Secretary of Culture, Alejandra Frausto Guerrero, the Undersecretary of Cultural Development, Marina Núñez Bespalova, emphasized that the people of this region are the holders of knowledge that has transcended millennia.

Therefore, as representatives of a universal culture, «they have an enormous responsibility, which goes beyond that of public servants, because it is a commitment to life, history and identity. We, from the Ministry of Culture, invite you to revalue what we have and preserve what is being lost, to think together and open paths so that this knowledge remains alive».
