#ISSSTE.- One of the achievements of the Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (Issste), whose new service concept is being promoted by the General Director, Pedro Zenteno Santaella, is the strategy of workshops to reduce the non-urgent surgical backlog that accumulated due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and which this year achieved significant progress.

In six months, from May to November 2022, 4,201 surgeries were performed in 43 hospitals on patients who required these interventions to treat various ailments, according to the report of actions presented by the regulatory director of Health, Ramiro Lopez Elizalde, to members of the Board of Directors of the organization, during the last working session of this year, which took place on December 8.

Lopez Elizalde explained that during the pandemic, priority was given to emergency surgeries and attention to patients with life-threatening conditions; this situation increased the backlog of operations, he said.

«This phenomenon also affected specialty consultation, where we had a universe of almost 11,000 deferred consultations and, currently, with the reestablishment of outpatient services and the optimal use of remote consultation (telemedicine), we have advanced by more than 70 percent, and we will continue until we reach a normal flow of services,» he said.
