#IMSS.- Health personnel from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) at the Specialties Hospital of the Siglo XXI National Medical Center (CMN) performed four kidney transplants simultaneously, the first time a procedure has been performed at the same time since 1963, when the transplant program began at the High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE).

The head of the Transplant Unit of the Specialty Hospital, Dr. Ramón Espinoza Pérez, informed that last Thursday, January 27, the patients who received a kidney were Estephany, Óscar, César and José Luis, aged 27, 26, 44 and 49, respectively, who had kidney failure.

He explained that each intervention lasted about five hours, but the whole process took between 24 or 36 hours from the call for the continuous transplant program, the logistics for the transfer of the organ procurement teams to La Paz, Baja California, and to the city of Queretaro where, thanks to the altruism of the relatives of two deceased patients, four kidneys were obtained to benefit the same number of people and change their lives.

Espinoza Perez mentioned that during the procurement by the surgical team, the clinical doctors of the service summoned 17 recipients, who underwent laboratory tests, X-rays, PCR of COVID-19 and chest tomography to determine which were compatible with the donated organs, in order to be transplanted and that they did not have any medical contraindication.
