#ISSSTE.- Specialists from the Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (Issste) in San Luis Potosí performed minimally invasive surgery at the state’s general hospital to preserve the hip and avoid placing a total prosthesis in a 55-year-old female patient, making it the first hospital in the entity to perform a procedure of this level of complexity.

The general director of Issste, Pedro Zenteno Santaella, congratulated the institute’s staff for achieving this operation, which cost approximately 250,000 pesos in the private sector. «It is a source of pride that the Issste health professionals are trained and have the necessary tools to provide the care deserved by the beneficiaries».

The coordinator of Orthopedics at the Issste General Hospital in San Luis Potosí, Omar Juárez Rodríguez, explained that the patient suffered from femoroacetabular impingement in the left hip, a diagnosis that could lead to total prosthesis, presenting symptoms such as pain in the groin and discomfort in the flexion area that appears when doing physical activity. He also mentioned that, at present, preservation treatments such as: lumbosacral, sciatica and coxofemoral joint blocks (infiltrations with anesthetic and steroid in the lumbar area, sciatica and hip) are already being carried out.

This surgery is performed in third level medical units, but in this hospital timely care was provided by means of arthroscopy (minimally invasive surgery), remodeling of the structural deformations that lead to early wear and tear and lead to degenerative osteoarthritis (deterioration of the cartilage of this joint), he pointed out.
