#GobiernoDeMéxico.- President Andrés Manuel López Obrador reaffirmed that the generation of energy by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) will increase 55 percent after the purchase of 13 power plants from Iberdrola, an operation carried out with the purpose of making the nation-owned company a majority shareholder.

He indicated that before the end of the current administration, capacity will reach almost 75 percent thanks to this recent acquisition, together with the construction of plants and the modernization of hydroelectric plants promoted by the Government of the Fourth Transformation.

«All this to continue maintaining the policy of support to the popular economy, so that the price of electricity does not increase as it has happened in recent years; so that what unfortunately happens to consumers in other countries does not happen to us, where the cost of electricity has doubled, tripled. The same has happened to the cost of gasoline, diesel, gas; not in Mexico because of the decisions we have taken,» he emphasized.

The President reiterated in a morning press conference that he will maintain the policy based on putting the public interest above private interests.

The Secretary of Finance and Public Credit, Rogelio Ramírez de la O, pointed out that of the plants acquired from Iberdrola, 12 are combined cycle plants and one is wind. Together they generate 8.5 gigawatts and add to the State’s 52.7 gigawatts of capacity.

He pointed out that Mexico’s demand is 48.1 gigas, so the purchase plus the CFE’s current capacity will supply the total demand.
