#GobiernoDeMéxico.- President Andrés Manuel López Obrador pronounced himself in favor of holding a citizen consultation so that the people of Mexico may decide if the representatives of the Judicial Power will be democratically elected as well as the deputies, senators and the head of the Executive Power.

«The Constitution establishes in its Article 39 that power emanates from the people and is instituted for their benefit and the people have at all times the right to change the form of their government. The people are sovereign. That is the essence of democracy; the people rule in democracy. So, why not ask the people? why not consult the citizens?», he said.

The President proposed that the question of the citizens’ consultation should read: «Do you want the judges, magistrates and ministers of the Judicial Power to be elected?

In a morning press conference, he reaffirmed that the ministers, magistrates and judges of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation should be elected by free and secret vote.

«The people have to participate in these decisions. Politics is everyone’s business (…) They should not be elected or appointed by the power elite, but by the people. Besides, this was already the case during the time when President Juarez and President Lerdo governed, in what is known as the period of the Restored Republic, from 1867 to 1876, ten years (…) It was the time when there was more independence in the powers», he remarked.
