Commitments to the Escazú Agreement are reaffirmed at Escazú Now event, progress and challenges for México / @SRE_mx >>>

#SRE.- Today, the event EscazúNow, advances and challenges for Mexico was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), where the most recent advances of our country in the implementation of the Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean, also known as the Escazú Agreement, were presented.

At the request of the SRE’s Undersecretariat for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, the General Directorate for Global Issues led the meeting, where the Escazú National Group (GNE) was presented, which will be the highest collegiate body of multi-stakeholder representation that prepares the necessary conditions to strengthen environmental governance in Mexico. The event reviewed its formation process, priorities and pending tasks, and began the conversation on its institutionalization.

In the opening segment, the General Director for Global Issues, Camila Zepeda, commented that the efforts of the last two years, which included consultations with all interested parties on the subject, resulted in the creation of this space for consultation between government agencies and representatives of the public, which will be responsible for defining the Comprehensive Implementation Route of the Mexican State for the Escazú Agreement.

On behalf of the government sector, the Deputy Director of Multilateral Affairs of the National Institute of Indigenous Peoples (INPI), Isabel Reyes Guerrero, pointed out that indigenous peoples inhabit one fifth of the Latin American region and are usually the most affected by the effects of climate change, a situation also present in Mexico. In this sense, INPI’s role in the NEB will be essential for the decisions made there to have a positive impact on the most vulnerable groups.
