#ISSSTE.- Restoring sight to 1,500 patients by 2023, through the National Cataract Surgery Campaign, has been one of the most significant achievements of the Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (Issste), with which we contribute to combating one of the main causes of disability due to blindness in Mexico and to improving the quality of life for the elderly (the age group most affected by this problem), informed the General Director, Pedro Zenteno Santaella.

The coordination of the massive cataract surgery days throughout the country was in charge of the medical director, Ramiro López Elizalde, who informed that it involved a great deal of logistic work for the diagnosis and selection of candidates for treatment; the availability of medical specialists and nursing personnel; operating rooms and supplies, which included intraocular lenses.

He added that provisions were made to have modern equipment, such as: high technology microscopes, phacoemulsification and vitrectomy devices, which allow the extraction of parts of the structures of the human eye to apply laser and ultrasound in the calculation of the intraocular lens; essential for this type of cataract operations.

During 2023, 29 hospitals participated in the abatement of the surgical backlog in ophthalmology services, as well as surgery centers and hospital clinics such as: General Hospital (HG) «Fernando Ocaranza», in Sonora; HG «Lázaro de Cárdenas», in Chihuahua; the Hospital Clinic (CH) Mazatlán, in Sinaloa; HG «Santiago Ramón y Cajal», in Durango; HG in Zacatecas; HG Tepic, in Nayarit; CH Puerto Vallarta and the Simplified Surgery Center (CECIS), in Jalisco; CH «Miguel Trejo Ochoa» and CH Manzanillo, in Colima; CH Uruapan and Hospital Regional (HR) Morelia, in Michoacán; and HG Aguascalientes.
