#ISSSTE.- Due to the constant fall of ash emitted by the Popocatepetl volcano, there has been an increase in medical consultations in medical units of the Institute of Security and Social Services for State Workers (Issste), especially in those located in nearby municipalities such as: Amecameca, Atlixco, Cholula, Cuautla, Yecapixtla and Zacualpan. Therefore, it is important to take self-care measures.

The Issste Medical Subdelegation in Puebla pointed out that some respiratory, ocular and dermatological diseases have been registered in the area. Regarding respiratory ailments associated with the dispersion of ash, she indicated that among the most common are: sore throat, cough, irritation and inflammation of the vocal cords. In addition, respiratory infections -the most frequent disease in medical units- have increased up to 10 percent. He pointed out that overexposure to ash can be a risk factor for eye diseases, eye irritation and, in the worst case, infection.

With the passing of the days, some skin irritations have been registered, mainly in people with previous allergy and dryness, which contribute to skin slagging. He explained that volcanic ash is formed by particles produced by the fragmentation of the rocks emanating from the volcano; therefore, they contain grit, minerals and volcanic glass, corrosive elements for human beings.
Since the beginning of the year, ash fall has been constant for the inhabitants of Mexico City, State of Mexico, Morelos, Puebla and Tlaxcala, according to reports from the National Center for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred).
