#IMSS.- The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) successfully performed the first heart transplant of 2025 at the General Hospital “Dr. Gaudencio González Garza” of the National Medical Center (CMN) La Raza, this procedure represents a second chance of life for a patient with severe heart disease, and underlines the importance of post-surgical care to ensure the survival and functionality of the new organ.
Mr. Martin, 62, suffered from dilated ischemic cardiomyopathy, a coronary artery disease that severely damaged the heart muscle, making transplantation his only option to stay alive.
The head of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Cardiopulmonary Support of the High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE), Dr. Carlos Alberto Lezama Urtecho, explained that the success of this type of transplant lies in overcoming multiple challenges, such as time and the coordination of a multidisciplinary team of approximately 70 people.
“From the moment a compatible donor is identified, the medical team must act quickly to guarantee the transfer of the organ, perform the surgery and coordinate a multidisciplinary team,” he said.
For his part, the clinical coordinator of the Heart Transplant Program at the UMAE Hospital General del CMN La Raza, Dr. Hugo Zetina Tun, emphasized that once the surgery is completed, a critical stage begins in which the acceptance of the new organ is evaluated, a phase that is of vital importance to ensure the patient’s stability.
He explained that during the first four or five days the heart’s functions and the organism’s response are closely monitored in the Intensive Care Unit, using advanced technology and specialized medical equipment.
