#EstadoDeJalisco.- To safeguard the health and physical integrity of those visiting the Virgin of Talpa, the Jalisco Ministry of Health (SSJ), through its Health Emergency Program, is coordinating the Pilgrim’s Route Health Safety Operation.
A network of 34 health units belonging to the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), Jalisco Health Services OPD, and Municipal Medical Services, among others, is active for these efforts. These units are distributed throughout Health Regions VI (Ciudad Guzmán), VII (Autlán), VIII (Puerto Vallarta), and IX (Ameca).
Gerardo Steven Tabares López, Health Emergency Coordinator, emphasized the importance of ensuring the health of pilgrims and warned of the main health problems that may occur along the route, such as respiratory illnesses (to a lesser extent) or gastrointestinal illnesses.
“Even those who are exposed to extreme natural temperatures. Now, the hot season increases the risk of heat stroke and dehydration,” he mentioned.
Added to the list are trauma, sprains, skin injuries, and injuries caused by traffic accidents. Poisoning from scorpion stings occurs less frequently.
Tabares López warned about other risks associated with this season, such as exposure to pollutants from forest fires and consuming food and beverages from street vendors.
Decompensation can also occur in people with chronic illnesses such as diabetes or hypertension, which require constant monitoring and medication.
