#Tlalpan, #CDMX.- Cataracts cause 34% of blindness in Mexico, and surgical treatment represents an urgent public health challenge. More than 47,000 new cases are diagnosed each year, but one in three people do not access treatment due to lack of resources.
To reverse this situation, the Mexican government is promoting the National Cataract Surgery Strategy «See for Mexico,» which offers free, comprehensive, and specialized care to older adults.
This Tuesday, the Tlalpan mayor’s office joined this national policy, joining the crusade for the visual health of people affected by cataracts.
The Luis Guillermo Ibarra Ibarra National Rehabilitation Institute, located in Tlalpan, will be one of the key locations. Mayor Gaby Osorio participated in the official presentation there, along with federal authorities and representatives from the health sector.
“Thanks to the See for Mexico Strategy, many children, older adults, and vulnerable populations can recover something as essential as their vision. Because seeing well means seeing the future better,” stated the mayor.
Osorio noted that this initiative represents a model of public policy with a humane approach, which sows health and reaffirms the governments’ responsibility to collective well-being.
The strategy is aimed at Mexicans over 60 years of age with a confirmed diagnosis of cataracts. Care includes registration, medical evaluation, surgery, and postoperative follow-up, at no cost to beneficiaries.
“This is a program that opens paths of light in homes that have been in darkness for years. Turning public policies into real, tangible, and humane actions is our responsibility,” stated Ramiro López Elizalde.
Also participating were Marta Zapata Tarrés (CCINSHAE), Dr. Carlos Javier Pineda Villaseñor (INR), and authorities from the Mexico City Ministry of Health.
The surgeries are performed thanks to medical personnel from institutions such as IMSS Bienestar, the Ministry of the Navy, and the Ministry of National Defense.
“This is a space for hope and solidarity. Restoring sight also means restoring other rights: work, education, autonomy, and a full life,” concluded Gaby Osorio.
