#InstitutoMexicanoDelSeguroSocial, #México.- A 24-year-old woman, originally from San Luis Potosí, managed to survive a serious venomous snake bite while camping, thanks to the specialized care she received at the High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE) of the “Dr. Gaudencio González Garza” General Hospital of the La Raza National Medical Center (CMN), which belongs to the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS).
With this case, there are now 100 patients treated for venomous snake bites at this medical unit in the last five years, with a survival rate of 100 percent, thanks to timely and specialized care.
The patient, identified as Adriana, arrived at the medical unit five days after the incident, with a bite located on her right ankle. She presented severe edema and loss of functionality in the extremity, which put her viability at risk due to the compromise of arterial circulation, venous return and the integrity of tendons and nerves.
The head of the Clinical Toxicology Department of the IMSS UMAE, Dr. María del Carmen Sánchez Villegas, said that after an initial medical evaluation, a multidisciplinary team intervened immediately to preserve the young woman’s life.
