#MinistryofForeignAffairs#Mexico.- The Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE) hosted a significant high-level event to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, coinciding with World Food Day. The gathering brought together federal authorities, the diplomatic corps, UN agencies, and rural producers to discuss global food security. Key figures such as the Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, Julio Berdegué Sacristán, and the Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights at the SRE, Enrique Ochoa, led the proceedings. Officials unanimously stressed the necessity of multilateralism and the pressing need to produce food in a just and resilient manner.

During their addresses, authorities underscored that nutrition must remain central to the public health agenda, highlighting the critical role of international cooperation in safeguarding ecosystems and guaranteeing sustainability across agri-food systems. Julio Berdegué Sacristán, the Secretary of Agriculture, stressed the importance of an FAO that demonstrates, through tangible actions and results, that multilateralism is still the most effective means to resolve contemporary global challenges. He called upon the FAO to support the transformational process currently underway in Mexico under President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo‘s government.

Berdegué Sacristán clarified the national focus on food resilience: «When we speak of food sovereignty, it is not an ideological slogan. It means how we build all the capacities a nation needs to guarantee the constitutional right to food in this country.» He emphasised that this involves more than mere production; it requires developing national «science, technology, and innovation capacities.» Meanwhile, Enrique Javier Ochoa, the Undersecretary, affirmed that food security is an international priority, demanding «a firm commitment to invest in fair value chains» for producers and consumers. He further insisted that «it is imperative that women and indigenous peoples… occupy a central place in decision-making» for creating more robust and adaptive food systems.
