#Tlalnepantla, #StateOfMexico.- In a dramatic on-site intervention, an officer from the General Constabulary for Community Proximity and Citizen Safety successfully held onto a young man, approximately 20 years old, who was attempting to jump from a pedestrian bridge in the San Rafael neighbourhood. The swift action of the uniformed member was crucial, as the young man was perilously close to falling, underscoring the vital role of immediate response and officer training in high-pressure situations. This incident highlights the challenges faced by emergency services personnel.
«When we managed to get him on the other side of the railing, he was thrashing about, insulting us, and shouting that he ‘no longer wanted to live’ and that we should ‘let him try again’,» recounted the officer, who is attached to the Crime Victim Support Unit. «We were able to control him and made him see that he was important to his family, friends, and even to us.» The young man, who lives in Cuautitlán Izcalli, had been in Tlalnepantla seeking work but was unsuccessful due to a speech impediment and anxiety attacks, which are serious personal challenges.
The officer further explained that the young man rejected the psychological support offered by the municipal authorities, stating he only wanted to return home to see his family. However, as they approached his house, he had a change of heart, fearing a reprimand, which is a common psychological reaction in such distress. The officers persevered, though, and eventually managed to locate his residence, showcasing their dedication to duty beyond the immediate rescue. Their persistence was key to ensuring his safety.

«When he saw his mother and siblings, a smile immediately appeared on the young man’s face,» the official indicated. «They received him with a mixture of joy and anguish; they only knew that he had gone out to look for work.» Deeply grateful, the mother committed herself to ‘requesting psychological help for her son’, acknowledging the seriousness of the underlying issues. This commitment to professional support represents a critical step towards long-term recovery and stability for the young man.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), it is estimated that globally, one in every 100 people takes their own life each year, equating to one death every 40 seconds, a chilling statistic. In Mexico, 8,856 deaths by suicide were recorded in 2024, with the State of Mexico registering a rate of 8.1 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants. This figure is 1.3 per cent higher than the national rate, estimated at 6.8 per cent by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), reinforcing the need for increased mental health provisions.
