The ABC’s of Good Road Driving

#SecretaríaDeInfraestructuraComunicacionesYTransporte.- Driving a car on the road is a great responsibility; in addition to coordinating motor and mental functions, one must be attentive to the environment.

The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) shares these recommendations for safe driving on the country’s roads:

  • Fasten your seat belt, as well as those of all passengers in the vehicle. In case of traveling with people under 1.35 meters tall, adapt a system that keeps them safe.
  • Adjust your seat and mirrors. It is important that the rearview mirror allows you to see the cars behind you, so avoid placing large objects in the rear of the vehicle. In the case of side mirrors, you will need to see a fraction of the rear of your car to have a reference of your position and that of other cars.
  • Pay attention to the traffic signs, they are all important. By respecting them, we will avoid accidents on our way. We must be aware that we are not the only ones on the road.

Drive at the speed indicated by the road signs you see along your route. This is the driver’s guide.

-Turn right and pass on the left. This will give you a free corridor for passing and safe mobility.

  • Use your turn signals to indicate your movements so you can react better and in time. Keep your lights on, this could mean the difference between an accident or not.
  • Remain attentive, without distractions. Avoid using your cell phone, eating, applying make-up, or any other activity.
  • Avoid driving tired. Fatigue is a risk factor that threatens people’s lives.
  • Watch out for «blind spots». Watching your surroundings avoids «blind spots» when changing lanes. Keep an eye out for trucks in the vicinity, as they have larger blind spots.
  • Be very clear about the transition between rural and urban roads. Remember that entering a city increases the concentration of pedestrians and you should slow down your car.
