Federal Ministry of Culture donates books of Chilam Balam in Peninsular Maya to the Yucatan State Library System

#SecretaríaDeCultura.- The Ministry of Culture of the Government of Mexico, through the General Directorate of Libraries, donated 40 books of the Chilam Balam, edited for the first time in Peninsular Maya by the National Institute of Historical Studies of the Revolutions of Mexico (Inehrm) and Miguel Vassallo, academic of the Institute of Philological Research of the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

The publications that make up the Chilam Balam, more than books, are collections of dissimilar texts, most of them written in Maya language using the Latin alphabet, hence the relevance of this being the first edition in peninsular Maya.

At the delivery ceremony, the federal Secretary of Culture, Alejandra Frausto Guerrero, affirmed: «The first window for knowledge, the most democratic window to reach wisdom is always a public library».

«The value of a public library is the window to universal wisdom».

At the end of her speech she closed with a quote from Miguel de León Portilla: «Like the oral tradition itself, the words of the Chilam Balam are a hurtful literature, although the appearance is fixed on the papers where it is written, those who renew the old leaves infuse them with life».
