Tecámac government reaffirms its commitment to indigenous peoples

#Tecámac, #EstadoDeMéxico.- The municipality of Tecámac reaffirmed its commitment and respect for the almost six thousand of its inhabitants who speak an indigenous language in order to preserve their traditions and customs.

With the construction of the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), Mixtec, Zapotec, Mayan, Totonac and Mazahua indigenous people migrated, said the mayor, Mariela Gutiérrez Escalante.

In the framework of the International Day of Indigenous Peoples, the mayor pointed out that the members of the indigenous peoples in this municipality make up 0.89 percent of the total population, among whom the most spoken language is Nahuatl, followed by Otomi, Mazatec, Mixe, Totonac, Mixtec and Mazahua.

Gutiérrez Escalante reiterated that this date serves to raise awareness about the problems they suffer and to reflect on these situations and devise possible solutions to them.

The Tecamaquenses communities with the highest number of speakers are Ojo de Agua, with 2,856; San Martín Azcatepec, 399; San María Ajoloapan, 262; Los Reyes Acozac, 249; Tecámac, 239, according to data from the INEGI Census of 2020.
It is noteworthy that the construction of the new Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA), migrated to Tecámac a lot of labor from different entities, of which a good number are inhabitants of some language, especially Mixteco, Zapoteco, Mixe, Totonaco and Mazahua.

The State of Mexico ranks 7th in the country with members of indigenous peoples.

On the other hand, the municipalities in the State of Mexico with the highest number of indigenous population are Temoaya, San Felipe del Progreso, Donato Guerra, Temascalcingo, Morelos, El Oro and San José del Rincón, Ixtlahuaca and Toluca.
Indigenous peoples face a multitude of similar problems, such as racial, social and economic discrimination, exploitation of their lands, deprivation of resources and lack of access to health services and education.

Therefore, this day should serve not only to show the world the richness of indigenous cultures and celebrate them, but also to raise awareness of the problems they suffer, reflect on these situations and devise possible solutions to them, commented Mariela Gutiérrez Escalante.
