IMSS to promote comprehensive rehabilitation program for children and adolescents with cancer / @zoerobledo @Tu_IMSS >>>

#IMSS.- The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) will develop a comprehensive oncology rehabilitation program for children and adolescents with cancer, with the aim of contributing to improving their quality of life and independence, providing timely attention to the after-effects of treatment, increasing timely referrals to Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Services, as well as training medical personnel and the multidisciplinary team of Pediatric Oncology and Hematology.

During the one hundred and first meeting between authorities of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) with mothers and fathers of pediatric oncology patients, Dr. Enrique López Aguilar, head of the Oncology Care Coordination, highlighted that primary caregivers will also be trained on the management of the oncopediatric condition, its consequences and the benefits of rehabilitation, while strengthening support networks in this area.

He said that although advances in chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery and hematopoietic cell transplants have made it possible to increase life expectancy, it has also made visible that there are more sequelae that have an impact on its quality, for which reason this program will seek to anticipate and treat the effects experienced by the patient and achieve the greatest possible functionality.

Dr. Lopez Aguilar pointed out that the target population of the program are children and adolescents with cancer who are IMSS beneficiaries with warning signs of neurological damage, amputation of a limb, prolonged immobilization syndrome and those who will be included in the surgical protocol.
