President of México celebrates legislators’ approval to consolidate National Guard; initiative passes to local congresses / @lopezobrador_ @GobiernoMX >>>

#GobiernoDeMéxico.- President Andrés Manuel López Obrador celebrated the approval in the Congress of the Union of the constitutional reform to consolidate the National Guard, through the Secretariat of National Defense.

«I take this opportunity to thank the legislators because it was approved that the National Guard will be supported by the Ministry of Defense and the Navy, that it will continue to be supported and the National Guard will be strengthened,» he stressed.

In a morning press conference, the President reiterated that the purpose of this measure is to turn the new institution into Mexico’s main public security institution and in no way is it intended to militarize the country.

«The fact that the National Guard will be a branch of the Ministry of Defense is so that it will not be diverted, that it will always be professional, that it will have the full support of the Defense and the Navy,» he said.

The Mexican Government, he said, promoted this initiative with emphasis on the defense of human rights; in addition, it endorses through legal channels the security tasks carried out by the Armed Forces.
