#IMSS.- Authorities from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) informed mothers and fathers of pediatric oncology patients about the progress of the OncoIMSS Children’s Strategic Plan, whose objective is to implement a new State Reference Center for the Care of Children with Cancer (ONCOCREAN) at the Regional General Hospital (HGR) No. 1 «Dr. Carlos Mac Gregor Sánchez Navarro» at the IMSS Representation in South Mexico City.

During the 111th meeting of the working group between IMSS authorities and parents of children with cancer, Dr. María de los Ángeles del Campo Martínez, representing the coordinator of Oncology Care, Dr. Enrique López Aguilar, pointed out that the thirty-sixth ONCOCREAN will have eight beds, two of which will provide services for the treatment of patients in palliative care. It will also have the advantage of having a transplant area in order to reinforce timely, comprehensive and quality care with specialized treatments.

In a virtual session, he added that this will increase the number of hematopoietic stem cell transplant procedures, regardless of regionalization, given the high demand for this priority treatment. This will help to attend the greatest number of pediatric oncological pathologies and reduce the number of patients sent to the High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE) of the Siglo XXI Medical Center (CMN) Pediatrics Hospital.

Dr. del Campo Martínez added that as part of the strategy, a hematologist and a pediatric oncologist are being hired to cover the morning and afternoon shifts, and a start will be made with the nursing staff at HGR No. 1, and the Technical Nursing Coordination sent a list of 10 nurses who began their training for cáncer patient care from February 13 to 17.
