Medical care and community action, a binomial that strengthens and promotes traditional medicine: Zoé Robledo / @zoerobledo @Tu_IMSS >>>

#IMSS.- The IMSS-Bienestar model links medical and preventive actions with the participation of 7,079 midwives, 753 traditional doctors and 1,379 rural health volunteers who integrate two components: medical care and community action, said the director general of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), Zoé Robledo.

«It is a work that has three characteristics: it is voluntary, it is organized and it is active in the incidence of the different factors that affect the health of individuals, families and the community. Educational communication is applied to promote health knowledge and the adoption of healthy habits.»

During the press conference headed by the President of the Republic, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, at the National Palace, the General Director of Social Security explained that one element of the attention is the traditional doctors, who base their practice on ancestral knowledge; they are the linguistic link, they are part of the local and community health systems; they also accompany patients to the health units when they identify any ailment.

He explained that in the IMSS-Bienestar model of care there are «sobadores, bonesetters, herbalists, healers, midwives and other specialties that are incorporated into this process».

Regarding midwifery, Zoé Robledo indicated that IMSS maintains close collaboration with women and men who help in the promotion of contraceptive methods, refer high-risk births, identify pregnant women, provide guidance on care during pregnancy, attend low-risk births, monitor the puerperium and promote breastfeeding.
