#IMSS.- In view of the recent activity of the Popocatepetl volcano, which has resulted in ash fall in neighboring areas and states, the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), calls on the population to take care of their respiratory tract, eyes, skin, digestive tract and to monitor vulnerable population, such as children, the elderly and people with chronic diseases.

Dr. Felipe Cruz Vega, head of the IMSS Special Health Projects Coordination, pointed out that people with conditions such as diabetes, asthma, bronchitis, nutrition problems, cancer or low immunity, should take special care in the event of volcanic ash fall.

«First, stay at home; second, if for some reason you have to leave your home, the protection would be: let’s start with the eyes, if possible use goggles, the glasses on the other side, the ash will enter and it will make us itch and we will scratch ourselves unconsciously. The other is to use masks, which became famous a few years ago and we can get them anywhere,» he said.

He assured that among the damages that ash can cause to people’s general health are damages to the mucous membrane of the nose, inflammation of the pharynx, conjunctivitis, skin lesions due to the caustic chemical-physical reaction and abrasion of the gastric mucous membrane due to the contact of ash with food or water.

«From now on, from this moment on, even if you are 60 kilometers away from the volcano, cover your water, your food and avoid going out in possible to the street. We hope this can happen soon, but both the volcano and the earthquakes are unpredictable, prevention is worth more than having to go to a Health Center,» he said.
