#IMSS.- The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) provides therapeutic treatment and educational strategies to patients with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in order to reduce symptoms and improve their daily functioning. Through its mental health services in Family Medicine Units (UMF) and Psychiatric Hospitals, the IMSS provides diagnosis, therapeutic treatment, educational strategies and medication to beneficiaries affected by ADHD.
Dr. Juan Carlos Mares Ramos, a psychiatrist and child and adolescent psychiatrist attached to the «Dr. Héctor H. Tovar Acosta» Regional Psychiatry Hospital, explains that ADHD treatment is a long-term individual and multidisciplinary process. It is based on disciplines such as psychiatry, psychology, individual therapy, family therapy, as well as psychosocial therapy, to control and manage the symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.
In some cases, the use of medication is also required for a comprehensive and timely diagnosis. This diagnosis is based on a clinical evaluation that includes interviews with the affected person or in the case of children, with parents or caregivers, to gather information on neurodevelopmental history, symptoms and other relevant factors to determine if there are symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
In the framework of the International Day for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, which is commemorated this July 13, Dr. Mares Ramos explained that ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a behavioral pattern of hyperactivity, inattention and impulsivity, which makes it difficult to process everyday situations. It is a complex and multifactorial disorder in which there is no single known cause. Genetic factors, gestational diabetes, depression during pregnancy and brain injuries at birth are some of the risk factors that are being studied, but they are not considered determinant for its development.
