IMSS specialists in Endocrinology promote prevention, training and research into chronic degenerative diseases / @zoerobledo @Tu_IMSS >>>

#IMSS.- The specialists in Endocrinology of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) who work in second and third level hospitals promote prevention strategies, training and research protocols for the benefit of patients with chronic degenerative diseases related to this specialty, particularly diabetes mellitus, which affects millions of beneficiaries and can be complicated by heart attacks, cerebrovascular disease or chronic kidney disease.

Dr. Pedro Mendoza Martínez, a physician attached to the Endocrinology Department of the Hospital de Especialidades del Centro Médico Nacional (CMN) La Raza, pointed out that these specialists cover a wide range of conditions, since they treat people living with obesity, diabetes, thyroid disease, tumors, alterations in the adrenal glands, in the functions of the ovaries, as well as the consequences that lead to endocrine dysfunction.

He indicated that in addition to covering the clinical part, this High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE) is in charge of research protocols on obesity, diabetes and thyroid; in the last three years, resident physicians have developed at least 10 theses annually that have allowed them to investigate conditions that involve the care of patients at CMN La Raza.

In the framework of the Endocrinologist’s Day, which is commemorated on July 24, he highlighted the participation of specialists in the development and application of the Comprehensive Care Protocols (PAI) for the care of people with diabetes and its complications, «which is currently the most important indicator for its management, and also in the revision of the PAI for women with gestational diabetes, so that they can have a healthy pregnancy without complications».

Dr. Mendoza Martinez explained that the Pediatric Endocrinology service provides follow-up to children and adolescents under 18 years of age, in order to evaluate and provide treatment for height problems; identify early diseases with hormonal alterations; and care for patients who debut with type 1 diabetes, «they take care of them and educate them on the use of insulin, changes in habits and lifestyle to improve their glycemic control».
