#SRE.- The Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Carmen Moreno Toscano, received yesterday in México City the Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa, Alvin Botes, to co-chair the III Meeting of the Mechanism for Consultations on Matters of Mutual Interest and to make an overall assessment of the state of the relationship and its prospects.

As a result of the meeting, the governments of Mexico and South Africa issued a joint statement (available here) in which they reaffirmed the importance of their bilateral relationship and committed to relaunch their cooperation agenda after the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to achieve the political, economic and collaborative potential that interaction between such relevant countries in the global south as Mexico and South Africa should have.

The high-level officials agreed on the importance of holding the third meeting of the Binational Commission at the level of foreign ministers in the future, for which they will soon convene the various sub-commissions that comprise it and identify priority areas for collaboration and follow up on the actions underway. They also agreed to promote among their respective authorities the conclusion of the legal instruments under negotiation on tourism, veterinary and customs matters, which will enrich the scaffolding of mutual cooperation.

Undersecretary Moreno and Vice Minister Botes reviewed various issues on the global and regional agenda, while reiterating their positions on nuclear disarmament, the peaceful settlement of disputes, respect for international law, as well as sustainable development, equality for all people and inclusive economic growth, among other areas.

México and South Africa established diplomatic relations on October 27, 1993, when the apartheid system began to be dismantled. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the beginning of relations between the two countries. The Mechanism for Consultations on Matters of Mutual Interest was established in 2001, with two meetings having been held at the level of deputy ministers: in 2007 (Mexico) and in 2019 (South Africa). In 2022, South Africa was Mexico’s 1st trading partner in Africa and 48th worldwide. South Africa is the 2nd largest economy in Africa in terms of GDP and the most diversified in terms of the sophistication of its industrial sectors.
