#IMSS.- The High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE) General Hospital «Dr. Gaudencio Gonzalez Garza», of the National Medical Center (CMN) La Raza, of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), has been a pioneer for 21 years with the implementation of home delivery of clotting factor concentrates to people living with Hereditary Hemophilia.

Dr. Sandra Alicia Sánchez Félix, head of the Pediatrics Division of the UMAE, commented that CMN La Raza currently has around 680 people living with this condition, of whom 180 are treated at the General Hospital, with 40 percent of them benefiting from home delivery of the deficient factor. This year, more people will be enrolled in this supply modality, once they have completed their training.

«This has been an important benefit for people living with hereditary hemophilia, particularly in children under 18 years of age, because they do not have to go to the hospital to receive the deficient factor, which avoids school absenteeism.

Every day more and more children know how to apply the deficient factor. At the unit, the health team trains the primary caregiver, the family member and the child so that they can properly apply the medication, and when the child acquires the skill, he/she will do it by him/herself,» said the specialist.

She pointed out that if people do not receive the proper treatment, the disease can become incapacitating due to the hemorrhages that can occur in the joints, muscles or in another region of the body, and sometimes people need to use wheelchairs to move around.
