#ISSSTE.- Reducing the impact of lung diseases, which are among the leading causes of death in Mexico and the world, through prevention strategies, timely diagnosis and access to specialized treatments, is a priority for the Institute of Security and Social Services for State Workers (Issste), informed the pulmonologist Guadalupe Espitia Hernández, from the «1° de Octubre» Regional Hospital.

On the occasion of World Lung Day, which is commemorated today, she offered data to measure this public health problem: «Globally, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death; in turn, lung cancer is the most lethal of all oncological pathologies. In Mexico, until 2022, COVID-19 was the fourth leading cause of death; influenza and pneumonia ranked ninth and COPD tenth».

The general director of Issste, Pedro Zenteno Santaella, has taken this situation very seriously and has improved methods to care for respiratory health, increasing the number of specialists; opening courses in pneumology; opening new areas and care centers; updating protocols for care, diagnosis and treatment.

Pneumologist Guadalupe Espitia also mentioned that special emphasis has been placed on promoting the prevention of risky behavior in the population entitled to the care, such as the consumption of potentially toxic inhalants in the area of narcotics, which goes hand in hand with the cultural impact that social participation can have in terms of self-care measures and avoiding exposure, for example, to tobacco, wood smoke, marijuana consumption and other types of drugs, which are still the number one cause of lung damage today.
