#IMSS.- The Pediatric Surgical Division of the High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE) of the «Dr. Gaudencio González Garza» General Hospital of the La Raza National Medical Center (CMN) performs more than six thousand high specialty pediatric surgeries per year, which represents 30 percent of the hospital’s surgical productivity.
This area is in charge of nine services in charge of solving complex pathologies and embryonic failure that occur in children, who are offered the specialties of: Pediatric Neonatal Gastric and Thoracic Surgery, Urology, Oncosurgery, Maxillofacial Surgery, Reconstructive Surgery, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology and Endoscopy.
«They all perform highly specialized procedures that result in a successful recovery and allow the patient to move forward in optimal health conditions,» said Dr. Gustavo Hernandez Aguilar, head of the Division.
Twenty years after its creation, this area has been strengthened with the arrival of high-level specialists, human resources training, innovation in surgical techniques, state-of-the-art technology and support in pediatric interventional radiology procedures, which improves prognosis and facilitates surgeries.
«We have been innovators in different techniques within the Mexican Institute of Social Security at national and international level, especially in Neurosurgery services with the first fetal surgery (hydrocephalus) in 1999, the separation of ischio-ischiopubic and thoraco-ophalopagus conjoined twins, the resection of the largest tumor in the country that weighed 23 kilograms, procedures performed between 2004 and 2015,» said Hernandez Aguilar.
Currently, the Division has the most advanced fetal surgery to repair meningocele or encephalocele from 27 weeks gestation, thanks to which it has achieved the successful birth of babies, working together with staff from the UMAE Hospital de Ginecobstetricia No. 3 of this CMN.
