Yaqui irrigation district to be inaugurated in June 2024; president hands over repatriated sacred artifacts / @lopezobrador_ @GobiernoMX >>>

#GobiernoDeMéxico.- During his visit to the community of Huírivis, in Sonora, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced the inauguration of the Yaqui Aqueduct at the end of February and of the Yaqui Pueblo 018 Irrigation District on Sunday, June 9, 2024. Accompanied by the director general of the National Water Commission (Conagua), Germán Martínez Santoyo, and the deputy director general of Hydro-agricultural Infrastructure of said agency, Aarón Mastache Mondragón, he formalized the dates to guarantee access to water in the region.

«These are two important works that we have to finish, we cannot leave them unfinished (…) This will allow us to have drinking water, healthy water in all the towns and, also, it is not only to have the general distribution lines but to take the water to the towns, that is why we have to move forward», he added.

«We have to move forward and I take this opportunity to call on all public officials to apply ourselves thoroughly so that we can move forward as much as possible,» he added in Guaymas.

The governor announced that on Friday, December 1st, the process of transferring Irrigation District 018 to the people will take place; it will be the first to be administered by a native people and will be made up of a group of Yaqui women and men fully trained to take charge of this project.

Additionally, he committed to continue the restitution of lands by the Mexican Government as part of the Justice Plan of the Yaqui People. He said that there is sufficient budget oriented to the purchase of hectares.

«There is willingness to comply, that we continue to restitute lands to the Yaqui people. Whatever has to be done through the legal means of recovery, of restitution, enforcing the presidential resolution of General Cardenas,» he argued.

At the same time he called on federal officials to conclude this project that provides justice to the Yaqui people in different areas such as housing, urban development, roads and electrification. He will return to the site before the end of the six-year term in September 2024.
