#ISSSTE.- Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world and the first cause of irreversible blindness. In view of this, and on the occasion of World Glaucoma Day, the Institute of Security and Social Services for State Workers (Issste) recommends timely detection and adherence to pharmacological treatment, especially in people with risk factors, as is the case of those living with diabetes mellitus.
Ophthalmology specialists from the Hospital Regional «Gral. Ignacio Zaragoza» point out that the Glaucoma Research Foundation estimates that more than 60 million people worldwide could suffer from it https://goo.su/gqpBFt, and up to 80 percent of the cases can be controlled with lifelong pharmacological treatment, as long as they are detected in a timely manner; exceptionally, there are severe malignant cases that may require surgery.
