#IMSS.- On the occasion of World Sleep Day 2024, which is commemorated on March 15, the Epidemiological and Health Services Research Unit, Aging Area of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) organized a dialogue with academics and specialists to promote the culture of good sleep in the elderly.
Among the topics discussed were: What is sleep and what is it for, the importance of the duration and quality of sleep for older adults, how to detect sleep disorders that require medical attention, sleep hygiene measures and relaxation techniques for restful sleep, among others.

In the auditorium of the Coordination of Health Research, Academies Building of the Siglo XXI National Medical Center (CMN), the head of the Coordination of Health Research, Laura Bonifaz Alfonzo, pointed out that good sleep is fundamental to have a healthy mind and to be in optimal conditions to carry out work and daily life activities.

She emphasized that in participatory medicine and research, it is essential that the population using the services be actively involved, which is why older people were invited to this dialogue and some are even part of studies on obesity and sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass, strength and function) carried out by the Epidemiological Research Unit.

For his part, the head of the Epidemiological and Health Services Research Unit in the IMSS Aging Area, Sergio Sánchez García, welcomed more than 100 adult users of the IMSS Center for Social Attention to the Health of Older Adults (CASSAM) and senior citizens, so that the dialogue would give them a better understanding of what sleep is and in what situations medical intervention should be requested.
