#GobiernoDeMéxico.- President Andrés Manuel López Obrador affirmed that, contrary to what has been reported in some U.S. media, the request made by the Mexican Government to allocate 20 billion dollars a year to address the causes of migration in Latin American and Caribbean countries is not blackmail to the United States.

«I have been asking the presidents of the United States to help the people because migration does not happen for pleasure, but out of necessity. People have to make a living and they go to the United States for that purpose, but if in their places of origin they had job opportunities and welfare, they would not leave,» he explained.

In a morning press conference, he reiterated that the budget would help to reduce the migratory flow and the risks to which people are exposed during their transit.

«There they say -because I have already heard it not only during President Trump’s administration but also with President Biden- that this does not solve the problem because the governments of Latin America and the Caribbean are very corrupt and it is throwing money away and it is like an excuse, like a pretext, to not help in anything or to help. For example, what they did here with the Merida Plan, they gave away helicopter gunships, weapons, when what is needed is to attend to the needs of the people,» he emphasized.

The President recalled that Mexico has made other proposals to the United States that would contribute to improving the living conditions of migrants, such as the regularization of Mexicans who have been living and working honestly in the United States for more than five years and of the DACA youth, known as dreamers, as well as the non-repression of Mexican nationals.
