SRE inaugurates the tenth edition of the Summer School on Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation / @aliciabarcena @SRE_mx >>>

#SRE.- The tenth edition of the Summer School on Nuclear Disarmament and Nonproliferation for Latin American and Caribbean diplomats, organized by the Matias Romero Institute (IMR), in coordination with the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (Opanal) and the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, will be held from July 1 to 5.

The national capacity building program aims to contribute to the training of new leaders in nuclear disarmament in Latin America and the Caribbean, offering a space for analysis and reflection on the total elimination of nuclear weapons.

The participants, diplomats from 26 Latin American and Caribbean States, will have the opportunity to interact with leading experts in the diplomatic and academic fields.

The opening high-level panel, dedicated to reflecting on the importance of education for peace and disarmament, was attended by the Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Joel Hernández García; the Secretary General of Opanal, Flavio Roberto Bonzanini; the Under Secretary for Arms Control, Deterrence and Stability of the U.S. Department of State, Mallory Stewart, who participated remotely; and the Director of the Arms Control and Disarmament Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Chitaru Shimizu.

The Summer School has established itself as an example of Mexico’s leadership in promoting disarmament and peace education, in line with the guiding principles of national foreign policy, being a point of reference in the region and a model for other regions. Since its creation in 2014, 328 diplomatic personnel, 176 women and 152 men, have been trained in the program.
