We are working to make the Public Education System at INBAL a space for Mexico’s young people: Claudia Curiel de Icaza

#CiudadDeMéxico, #México. – The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, highlighted the work that the Ministry of Culture has carried out in recent months to improve the National System of Artistic, Formal and Community Education, with the elimination of registration fees and the implementation of the Comprehensive Renovation and Maintenance Project, through which six educational centres have received general attention with the aim of ensuring that the schools of the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (#INBAL) are a space for young people.

«Very quickly, Claudia Curiel and her team literally got down to work, and they are already repairing and maintaining practically all the INBAL schools. And we are going to continue working. Tuition fees are no longer charged, they are now free. And we are going to continue working so that this Public Education System in the Ministry of Culture, in the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature, becomes more and more a space for the young people of Mexico,‘ he assured during the morning conference ’Las mañaneras del pueblo».

The Secretary of Culture, Claudia Curiel de Icaza, said that the first stage of the Integral Renovation and Maintenance Project involved the participation of the students of the education centres through assemblies held to find out their needs and thus intervened:

The National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving (ENPEG) La Esmeralda.

The National School of Classical and Contemporary Dance (ENDCC).

The Escuela Superior de Música (ESM), at its campuses in the Centro Nacional de las Artes (CENART) and Fernández Leal.

The National School of Theatre Art (ENAT).

The Academy of Mexican Dance (ADM).

The Xocongo Complex, which houses the School of Craft Design and the Centre for Choreographic Research.

Among the works that have been carried out are: the restoration of stave floors; new lighting was installed in corridors and classrooms; epoxy floors and paint were applied; ceilings, ironwork, gates and railings were repaired; waterproofing was carried out, acoustics were improved in classrooms and doors, bathrooms and dressing rooms were replaced.

He also reported that, as part of the strategy to democratise access to culture, promote social inclusion and professionalise artistic education in Mexico, the ‘Creative Seedbeds for Peace’ programme is being promoted, which has been a community work tool that in 2024 served 13,735 girls, boys and young people, In 2025, 9,000 more beneficiaries will be added, including 4,000 children and young people from Tamaulipas, Durango, Tabasco, Chiapas, Sinaloa, Baja California and San Luis Potosí, where choirs, orchestras, bands and traditional ensembles will be created.

These Semilleros also form part of the work of the Attention to the causes of the National Security Strategy, which is carried out through the Ministry of the Interior in different parts of the country; in this context, 30 Semilleros Creativos were created in Tijuana, Ciudad Juárez, Celaya, León, Acapulco, Chilpancingo, San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chimalhuacán and Valle de Chalco. In addition, 75 more will be created.
