#Tlalpan, #CDMX.- In the context of International Mother Earth Day, the Tlalpan mayor’s office held a sacred ceremony in the indigenous village of San Miguel Topilejo as part of the 2025 Native Festival, a community event that honors the living memory of the indigenous peoples of Tlalpan, their indigenous worldview, and their connection with nature.
The event was attended by Tlalpan Mayor Gaby Osorio and Mexico City Secretary of the Environment Julia Álvarez Icaza Ramírez, who represented Mayor Clara Brugada.
Gaby Osorio actively participated in the ritual to pray for good rains and harvests for Tlalpan’s countryside. In her message, she emphasized the importance of protecting the land from its cultural roots:
«This festival is a space to honor our peoples and to reaffirm that the land is life, history, and future. Defending it also means protecting our identity,» she said.
For her part, Secretary Álvarez Icaza emphasized the symbolic value of the ritual:
“We come from the earth, we go to the earth, we defend the earth, and we are the earth. May this ceremony reconnect us with the earth, with the corn, with the vegetables, and with the rains that have already honored us,” she said to applause, just after a light drizzle.
For her part, the chronicler of Topilejo took the floor to highlight the sacred nature of the site: “We may not believe it, but two hours ago we opened the gates and it rained. Here lies the goddess Chicomecóatl, a symbol of fertility. San Miguel Topilejo is living Xochimilca land, which deserves respect,” she stated, recalling that this spot has been identified since ancient times as a ceremonial center for indigenous peoples.
