GEM rehabilitates public spaces in municipalities with Gender Violence Alerts with the «Let’s Walk Safely» strategy / @Edomex >>>

#EstadoDeMéxico.- The State of Mexico government has rehabilitated 31.6 kilometers of public spaces with a gender perspective in 11 municipalities with Gender Violence Alerts through the «Caminemos Seguras» (Let’s Walk Safely) strategy.

This action guarantees women’s right to free movement in areas with a high incidence of crime, benefiting 262,237 residents of the State of Mexico to date.

Thanks to this strategy, implemented by the Secretariat for Women (SeMujeres) in collaboration with the Secretariat of Urban Development and Infrastructure (Sedui) and the State of Mexico Road Board (JCEM), the government of Professor Delfina Gómez Álvarez has recovered and transformed, with a gender perspective, spaces where women of the State of Mexico thrive, with concrete projects such as:

  • Rehabilitation of 14 roads with tactical urban planning.
  • Implementation of 40 urban murals.
  • Installation of 25 smart monitoring points.
  • Installation of more than 1,700 suburban lighting fixtures and 1,837 interpostal lighting fixtures.

This strategy involves leaders from the Networks of Women Peacebuilders (MUCPAZ), who identify territorial and security needs. These initiatives are used to design and implement actions focused on the recovery, transit, ownership, and enjoyment of safe, violence-free public spaces for girls, adolescents, and women in the communities.

This approach seeks to guarantee inclusive urban environments where this sector can fully exercise their right to mobility and participation in community life.

“Caminemos Seguras is a public policy of the Government of the State of Mexico that will be strengthened with ongoing actions to guarantee women’s free and safe mobility, highlighting their right to participate in public spaces free of stereotypes, inequalities, and discrimination,” highlighted Mónica Chávez Durán, head of SeMujeres.

This strategy has been strengthened with the publication of the «Guide for the Recovery of Public Spaces with a Gender Perspective in the State of Mexico,» presented on March 8 of this year, which contains strategies for before, during, and after these actions.

This guide is available to all municipalities that wish to join this initiative, in addition to the 11 municipalities with a Gender Violence Alert: Chalco, Chimalhuacán, Cuautitlán Izcalli, Ecatepec, Ixtapaluca, Naucalpan, Nezahualcóyotl, Tlalnepantla, Toluca, Tultitlán, and Valle de Chalco.

Mónica Chávez Durán indicated that the «Let’s Walk Safely» strategy responds to Governor Delfina Gómez Álvarez’s mandate to eradicate the inequalities faced by women, prevent the multiple forms of aggression that occur in public spaces, and promote a life free of violence.
