#IMSS.- Currently, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) has 22,981 family physicians distributed across the three levels of care, with a greater concentration in the First Level Family Medicine Units (UMF). Of this total, 14,108 are women and 8,873 are men, who perform essential work in national public health on a daily basis.
In the framework of Family Physician Day, the coordinator of Medical Programs in the IMSS Family Medicine Division, Dr. Juan Carlos Tomás López, reported that each family physician is responsible for an average of 3,000 patients and provides 24 consultations per six-hour shift, reflecting the high demand and commitment of the medical staff.
He emphasized that family medicine is consolidated as the cornerstone of the Social Security health system, providing comprehensive care to millions of beneficiaries throughout the country and efficiently preventing chronic diseases.
“Family medicine is a comprehensive, holistic specialty that allows us to treat patients from birth to old age, promoting healthy lifestyles and preventing and controlling chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes,” he noted.
Dr. Tomás López emphasized that 80 to 85 percent of the population’s acute and chronic conditions can be treated, controlled, or resolved at the Primary Care Level, demonstrating the effectiveness of this model.
He added that in addition to chronic diseases, IMSS family doctors also treat common acute conditions such as respiratory infections and diarrheal diseases, especially during critical seasons.
The IMSS Medical Programs Coordinator explained that among the recent improvements implemented by the Institute in family medicine, the opening of full-time medical units stands out. These units allow for care on weekends, from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., making it possible to take advantage of the existing infrastructure and facilitate access for those who cannot attend during the week.
